Некоторые модели телефонов позволяют загрузить новую версию прошивки из интернета без подключения к компьютеру. Проверка наличия обновлений, таким образом, осуществляется посредством меню аппарата. Размер файла с прошивкой, в зависимости от модели, варьируется от 500 КБ до нескольких мегабайт. В этом случае абоненту, конечно, придётся оплатить входящий трафик в соответствии с тарифным планом оператора. Процедура обновления длится от 5 до 15 минут.

Иначе обновление программы происходит с участием компьютера с установленной программой Nokia Software Updater. В онлайне можно пока обновить лишь модели N70, N72, 6131, 6630, 6680, 6681 и 6682. Обещается, что этот список будет расширен.

Ранее для обновления "прошивки" телефона происходило только в сертифицированных сервисных центрах Nokia.
